LaserCutZ was commissioned to fabricate new frame for a metal sculpture to be installed in NYC subway station. Whats needed to be done is to cut existing sculpture metal frame, expended it in size to meet new dimension requirements by artist and then weld new frame together. Aside form making new frame we needed to make plate that will hold sculpture face. In order to do this, we 3D scanned existing metal plate and created cut shape based on original holder plate. When form 3D scan we extracted 2D data to a DXF file so we can cut new plate. Those plates are rather large and thick 3/8″ steel, total size was larger then 5x10ft so we separated art into 2 sections so it can be cut form 4x8ft steel sheet. We used our fiber laser to cut both of those metal plates. When finished they got welded together but deep structural welding to be sure that plates hold well together. Newly fabricated plate got counter sunk holes and required by client and then it was fitted to extended frame structure.

Client form upper east side Manhattan asked lasercutz to repair their exclusive sculpture that was damaged during moving. Sculpture consist of black mirror and brass frame. Brass got cracked and needed to be re-welded. Crack happened due to original artist using braising to attach brass parts together, and this is not best structural way. We re-manufactured whole holding brass frame by welding it with TIG as this welding method will be much more reliable. TIG welding melts same material rod over desired metal peace and fuses them together dues to high heat created by electrical arc. New frame welded by LaserCutZ will be much more durable and last years. In general LaserCutZ can do any type of historic restorations of metal sculptures and other parts that require welding. We can do conventional welding along with fiber laser welding and even microscope welding for fine details such as jewellery.

Aluminum is one of the hardest material to weld but it is NOT a problem for LaserCutZ team. This overflow tan was cut from aluminum sheet metal on our fiber laser cutting machine, then it was TIG welded to shape with observation window and hose connectors and filling cup. Spot welding is nothing new and not exiting, it been around for ages and does it job, but when it comes to a laser worlds, doing spot laser welding becomes fun and easy.
